Eggplant: Black Beauty
CERTIFIED ORGANIC SEED, 1 packet (25 seeds)
Solanum melongena (80 days) A classic Italian heirloom variety first introduced in 1902. Recognized world-wide as the standard for large-fruited black eggplant. Pear-shaped 6-9” deep purple fruits turn glossy and black when mature, averaging 2 lbs. Bushy 30” tall plants with strong branches, holding fruit well off the ground. Common in Italian, Indian, Chinese and Japanese cuisine, offering many delicious recipe options.
Sow seeds indoors 8-12 weeks before last frost date in warm soil and a warm location. These heat loving plants germinate best at 85°F. Plant 1⁄4” deep in well drained soil. Can sow thickly in flats and transplant. Plant outdoors after danger of frost when daytime temps are near 70°F. Space 18- 24" between plants and 30-36" between rows. Optimal soil pH is 6.5-7. Eggplant is a heavy feeder but if over fertilized, they’ll grow lots of foliage but produce less fruit.
