Growing Notes
Sow Lychnis seeds indoors 6 - 8 weeks before the last frost is expected. Use well-draining starter soil. Planting Depth— sow the seeds on the surface, and press into the soil. Lychnis seeds need light to germinate. Keep seed continuously moist until germination. Suggest covering with plastic wrap to keep moisture levels high. Soil Temp. for Germ.: 60-70°F. Days to Germ.: 14-21 days.
Transplant outdoors after danger of frost and when seedlings are 2 inches tall spacing 12-18" apart. Prefers full sun to light shade. and well drained soils with moderate moisture. Deadhead spent blooms to prolong blooming season. Flowers may bloom the first year from seed if started early indoors. Watering deeply throughout the growing season, mulching around the base to keep the roots cool. Winter hardy to zone 3.
Seed can also be fall or spring planted, when it is too cold to germinate seeds and soil temperatures are below 45 degrees F; the seed will lay dormant through the winter until growing conditions are right. Survival rates are not likely to be as good as indoor starts.
