Salvia coccinea Open, airy spikes of nectar rich scarlet flowers that open over a span of several weeks, blooming continuously from mid-summer to fall. Attractive to bees and hummingbirds, these are excellent insectary and nectary plants. This beautiful native American plant is drought tolerant.
Growing Notes
Direct seed 3-4 weeks before last frost. Surface plant and mist to water the seed in with a good soaking; cover lightly with a coarse material like vermiculite. Seeds need some exposure to light to germinate; keep moist. Start indoors in flats 6 weeks before last frost. Keep moist during germination by covering with plastic wrap; remove plastic at emergence. Transplant into cell trays when form true leaves; transplant out- side with plant spacing of 12-18” inches apart. Moderate water. Full sun.
